S-Class Saloon: all-wheel drive

The 4MATIC all-wheel drive distributes power to where it is needed.

The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system[1] increases safety in wet weather conditions, on ice, snow and on poor roads. Instead of using conventional differential locks, this newest Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC generation employs electronics perfectly attuned to the vehicle.

  • Optimum distribution: 4MATIC splits the engine power in a ratio of 45%:55% between the front and the rear axles– to give the greatest traction in any situation
  • 4ETS: the system precisely and systematically brakes spinning wheels and thus enables the vehicle to move off and accelerate with power – even in adverse weather conditions or on poor road surfaces
  • Lightweight construction: thanks to its compact design, intelligent choice of materials and high efficiency rate, it carries only a fraction more weight than the rear-wheel-drive model

[1] The 4MATIC all-wheel drive is available exclusively in conjunction with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission and is not available for 12-cylinder models, AMG vehicles, the S 400 HYBRID and the S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY
