The order for a total of 217 urban buses includes a good 140 articulated buses and some 70 solo vehicles. Prior to this major order a Europe-wide call to tenders was put out and a two-year test phase was carried out, during which the Wiener Linien, in cooperation with the Graz University of Technology, carefully examined 28 models powered by diverse drive systems, driving them in a representative test cycle along real bus routes. The requirements in terms of environment-friendliness, noise emissions and passenger comfort arising from the tests, resulted in the Mercedes-Benz Citaro proving the most convincing all along the line.
"The dimension of this order is further proof that the new Mercedes-Benz Citaro has truly earned the title of "Bus of the Year 2013", explains Till Oberwörder, Head of Marketing, Sales & Aftersales Daimler Buses. "Viennese commuters can look forward to travelling aboard a high-quality, clean and reliable vehicle." In the competition for the distinction "Bus of the Year 2013", the new Citaro with Euro VI prevailed over its hybrid contenders.
