The emphasis is not just on checking out all functions in general, but very much on fine-tuning functions with the needs of buses and coaches specifically in mind. Merely taking over the systems from their more populous cousins in the Trucks division would be far too simple for Mercedes-Benz Buses & Coaches. After all, a bus does not just differ from a truck in terms of size, weight, axle configuration and speed profile, but also drives and reacts quite differently due to its "freight" being passengers.
For this reason, the maximum braking pressure of the Active Brake Assist system in buses and coaches is applied not in one go, but - taking into account the fact there may be standing passengers - with increasing force. Fine-tuning work of this nature calls for a lot of resources: for example, two lots of winter testing by the bus and coach team were required to perfect the AEBS Advanced Emergency Brake System. Taking into account the summer tests taking place from spring through to autumn in the period between, this means there was intensive testing over a period of one-and-a-half years.
